Infestation of mold and fungi
recovery of documents affected by microbial and fungal attacks
Documents, books, parchments and all paper-type material found in archives, libraries, museums or other storage facilities are exposed to dust, humidity and mold.
Attacks and proliferation of microorganisms and pests can also occur as a result of flooding but are mainly caused by bad ventilation, darkness and humidity that exceeds the permitted rates.
In case of microbial attacks and molds, Prodoc staff intervenes with the immediate isolation of the infested materials, then proceeding with the different cleaning techniques depending on the specific case and finally with the treatment of the entire infested area so that the contamination does not spread and health is restored.
Different techniques and solutions are used for the restoration and restoration of materials, including to give some examples: air drying, freezing, microwaves and ultrasounds, fumigation in an autoclave.

Tailor-made clean ups
We intervene on mold infestations using the results of our biodiagnostic laboratory.
We analyze mold contamination and determine the treatment method based on that.
We use bioanalytical measurements of ATP / AMP and contact samples to demonstrate total contamination with microorganisms present on the paper material (archive, library, parchments and other cellulose-based materials).
Contact samples (Bio-Tape or Fungi-Tape) determine the type of infestation and intensity of exposure.
We adapt our mold treatment to these results.
Mold severely degrades paper and is a health hazard.
Mold spores are everywhere and develop as soon as they encounter favorable living conditions. Humidity and high temperatures favor the growth of mold. Dirt, dust, adhesives and textiles provide an additional ideal breeding ground for their growth.
If the mold is not fought in time, it will degrade the paper and render it unusable. Mold also endangers the health of users.
Methods of intervention
In case of proliferation of fungi, molds and / or bacteria:
- We evaluate the intervention and rescue priorities.
- We then recover and sort, according to the degree of contamination, the documents and all the paper material attacked by molds.
- After on-site cataloging, we transport the documents to our laboratory to subject them to the most suitable treatments depending on the type of pest.
- We proceed with the safety of the environments and the subsequent clean up and sanitation.
- At the end of the decontamination, if necessary, the documents are subjected to flattening, reconditioning and housed in folders with a neutral pH.
